Field Trips

A Spanish Vaquero and Lady

We have yet to confirm any scheduling for  2012 California History Field Trip Tour .

The HISTerical Sisters Field Trip Tour has been developed by long time homeschooling mothers and sisters – Gina Threshie and Jennifer Steward. A great deal of thought and careful planning has gone into making “tours” an unforgettable experience. Their creativity and energy is unmatched! Kids and parents alike rave about the fun (and funny) experiences they have with “the sisters” . This tour is unique and not to be confused with other similar events others may be offering in the greater Sacramento area!

Along with the monthly local History Tour, The HISTerical Sisters ALSO have often offered a tour called The California History Field Trip Tour. To see where the tour took us in 2010 – 2011, read below.

We met every other month and went on five really amazing and educational field trips listed below. The HISTerical Sisters meet families on site dressed in historical costume!

  • Orientation and Introduction to California History (Meadow Vista Park)
  • Monterey
  • Sonoma
  • Sutter’s Fort and Old Sacramento
  • Coloma Gold Discovery State Historic Park

Field Trip Roster 2012

(Projected List of NEW Field Trips)

Our emphasis this year will be to visit sites that are scheduled to close with the 2012 state park closures. These include and are not necessarily on order – (Note that those marked with a star * are scheduled to close):

  • Governor’s Mansion, Stanford Mansion (Sacramento)  *              FIELD TRIP COMPLETED NOVEMBER 2011
  • Railtown 1897 Jamestown* / Columbia State Historic Park (Columbia)
  • Malakoff Diggins (Grass Valley area) *

Fees Etc.

The HISTerical Sisters plan, organize and manage the field trip experience and there is no charge for this service, but  as families come together and gather “on site” The HISTerical Sisters gather students together to form a  “class”. We, the teachers, charge for our teaching services. Often instruction will be prior to entering a site and also, often there will be docents or other interpreters to offer instruction on site as well. The fees for teaching services amount to $35 per family per field trip. Depending on the site, some other fees may apply – museum entrance, park entrance, parking, docent fees etc. We DO try to keep these to a minimum! We make our reservations through Reserve America which offer free reservations to school groups.

Space is usually limited to if you are interested please inquire. Due to the work involved in managing everything – we do not offer refunds.

California Chronologically!

While we’ve tried to attend our field trips “chronologically” so students gain a better understanding of the different time periods of California History, this year we will be sort of “mixed” up.

Here is the Chronology of California’s history up to the Gold Rush:

  1. Geography and First Native Inhabitants
  2. Explorers & Missions (Spanish period)
  3. Ranchos, Settling the State & Immigrants (Mexican period)
  4. Gold Rush, Bear Flag Revolt, California Becomes a State, Pioneers West (American period)
